Cow 101 Clinic

We offer COW 101 - the perfect opportunity for riders and/or horses who have never been around cows, but want to experience the thrill. We move slowly, so that both horse and rider are at ease with cows and so they both understand what is being asked and why. Once you and your horse have become
acquainted with the cows, we will move on to a little more precision.
A few obstacles, add a little team work and lots of fun moving
those pesky cows and you and your horse will have accomplished a lot
in a morning.
Barn News

Kathryn Roberts on Jazzy, the Longhorn steer
Spring had definitely arrived around here. We all have allergies, but the weather is fantastic. We've started up the Cow 101 classes again and had the first one on April 7. As always, it was a lot of fun introducing new horse an riders to working cows as well as seeing those who have been with us before improve.
Elliott and I have been roping at World Series ropings this year and we are trying to qualify for the finals in Las Vegas in December. All our horses are doing well. Sammy, my grey Quarter Horse gelding had a bad stone bruise, but is fine now. Razor, the resident number one horse, is still the jack of all trades. He is Elliott's favorite head horse, occasionally my heel horse, and in March, I took him to a sidesaddle clinic put on by the American Sidesaddle Association.
We've also started up with the sorting basics practice. The steers are a little fresh right now, but calm down quickly.
We've got a pretty serious group of girls coming over to practice roping on the Robo steer, and a couple of weeks ago, we had a few mounted officers come to ride in the arena and practice on the obstacle course.
All in all, we are fat and happy here. Our barn is healthy and full. The girls living in our little apartment are great. They feed and watch all our furry faced children while we are gone dog trialing, roping and just plain gone.

Sorting

We offer sorting practices during dry weather. Practice is timed or not, depending upon your level, and we offer all kinds of instruction as you go. Sorting is the next step after 101 or 102. We allow you as much time as you need to get the job done; what we have is not a full-blown competition sorting practice. Our practice is for horses and riders who are not yet quite ready to compete.

Team Roping Lessons

Our roping practice is also geared toward the beginner roper and horse. We begin with ground practice on the dummy to learn basic rope handling, to develop a swing and to work on accuracy, and then when you’re ready we go to the robo steer for something faster than the dummy, but not as fast as a steer out of the box. The addition of the horse to the program adds a whole new set of problems to conquer. Heading or heeling, you’ll get a good safe, start.

About Roberts Ranch

Elliott and I have lived here in Granite Bay since 1986. We have been busy with Placer Country Search and Rescue, 4-H, competitive team roping and California High School Rodeo. Our stable is full of horses; we have out own and we board a few extras. We are located perfectly outside Sacramento, which is two hours from the San Francisco Bay area and two hours from Lake Tahoe and the mountains. We've entertained Queen contests, team roping practice, sorting and the popular Cow 101 classes. We both are Cal Poly agriculture graduates and both try to live the western way of life and believe it is a great place to be.
